The President General of Nekede Ancient Kingdom, Hon.James Okorocha, has expressed delight over the unifying effects of Odu Nekede New Yam Festival, stating that the annual celebration has brought the community together, fostered a sense of unity and promoted cultural identity.
Speaking to journalists during the Odu Nekede New Yam Festival on the significance of the festival, he explained that New yam Festival is part of Igbo cultural heritage and a respected event in Igbo land.
According to him, "New Yam Festival is a significant cultural event in Igbo land, marking the end of the farming season and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. It's a time for thanksgiving to God for a bountiful harvest.
Our new yam festival in Nekede ancient kingdom is like a ritual, you know when you perform ritual with your fellow man, it comes with purity of heart, love,forgiveness, no bitterness of hheart Is a time of reconciliation and reunion"
The President General scored the social implications of Odu Nekede New Yam festival high for it's capacity to continuously bring the people together in an atmosphere of harmony.
Okorocha expressed delight that the festival's unifying effects are evident in the way it brings people of Nekede, friends and well wishers together, regardless of their religious background or social status.
Stating the positive effects of Odu Nekede, Okorocha noted that the festival promotes social cohesion, encourages people to put aside their differences and sacrifice for peace to reign and for the betterment of the community.
By celebrating the festival, he said the community has ensured the continuation of its rich cultural traditions, preserved it's cultural heritage, showcases, traditional customs, music, dance and cultural values to younger generations.
Totally pleased with Nekede New Yam Festival, he said is an essential part of the community's cultural identity that gives them a sense of pride and belonging, connects them to their roots and heritage".
