In a political landscape often dominated by cynicism and finger-pointing, it is refreshing to witness a lawmaker whose performance defies expectations and transcends political boundaries. Senator Osita Bonaventure Izunaso, representing Imo West Senatorial District, has not only lived up to the mandate entrusted to him by the electorate, but has far exceeded it and set a standard.
His two years in the Senate feel more like eight, with achievements spanning across legislation, empowerment, education, infrastructure, inclusiveness, and employment.
It is a fact that, in today's Nigeria, many people are quick to criticise public office holders, often driven by envy or a pull-him-down syndrome that misrepresents the true essence of political accountability. However, as a professional journalist and a product of robust media ethics, my role as a watchdog of the society mandates that I report based on facts and figures, not sentiments or assumptions. In that light, Senator Osita Izunaso’s track record in the 10th National Assembly and in his constituency deserves recognition of representation without scandal.
From the onset of his tenure in 2023, Izunaso hit the ground running with legislative vibrancy. He sponsored several bills that sought to uplift Nigeria’s economic and political structures, including the Investment and Securities Bill. This bill was designed to deepen Nigeria’s capital market, promote investor confidence, and support small and medium-sized enterprises in line with the federal government's vision of reducing poverty and boosting economic growth. Notably, his oversight and input on this bill helped open up the capital market to broader public participation, allowing everyday Nigerians to buy and trade stocks and cryptocurrencies. This development has since ignited a wave of individual investments and financial literacy across the country.
However, Senator Izunaso’s impact goes beyond legislation. On the occasion of his first anniversary in office and birthday celebration, the senator rolled out a massive empowerment initiative that left hundreds of constituents rejoicing. Men, women, and youths were equipped with tools and machinery to support self-employment. These included sewing machines, grinding machines, welding equipment, barbing kits, commercial motorcycles, and even vehicles. This gesture aligns with the federal government's efforts at reducing unemployment and eradicating poverty.
His empowerment efforts are not a one-time display. For many years now, Izunaso has maintained a consistent tradition of providing for his constituents, particularly the vulnerable. His special focus on persons living with disabilities stands out. Whether from Imo State or not, people living with disabilities in the zone have continued to benefit from his inclusive programmes. This commitment reflects his belief that leadership must transcend ethnic, religious, or social classifications.
Senator Izunaso’s deep appreciation for education is evident in his recent gesture of registering over 200 students from the Orlu Zone for both the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He also awarded scholarships to over100 candidates who attain outstanding scores in their UTME. Izunaso, as an education-focused lawmaker, has attracted federal government institutions to his constituency and lately technology innovation centres that will be cited in two communities in Orlu. This proposal was captured in the 2025 budget. Senator Izunaso will soon make a formal pronouncement and unveil the two institutions where these technology centres will be established. An attorney by training and a calm and calculative progressive, he continues to push for practical educational development that will benefit generations.
In terms of employment generation, Senator Izunaso has facilitated numerous federal jobs for sons and daughters of Orlu Zone. These appointments came with favourable working conditions and salaries, bringing hope to many families and contributing to local economic stability. In a time when job opportunities are scarce, such interventions cannot be overemphasised.
Moreover, his proposed bill for the creation of Orlu State has ignited discussions on geopolitical equity in Nigeria. The South East, long underrepresented in state structure, may find a voice through this proposal. His motion calling for a political resolution to the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu further shows his understanding of the delicate socio-political dynamics in the region and his commitment to peace and reconciliation.
Senator Osita Izunaso has distinguished himself from many of his colleagues, not merely by his words but by tangible actions. His reach cuts across all strata of society men, women, youths, the disabled, students, the employed and the unemployed. His humility and accessibility have endeared him to his people, and his name continues to resonate positively across Imo West and beyond.
Indeed, if one were to assess his two years in office using the usual metrics of performance, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Senator Izunaso’s first term feels like two. His work ethic, legislative accomplishments, and humanitarian outreach reflect the qualities of a seasoned leader, a servant of the people, and a patriot in the truest sense.
As the 2027 political season slowly draws near, many eyes are already turning to him with hope and expectations. Whether or not he seeks another office, one fact remains clear: Senator Osita Izunaso has raised the bar for political representation in Nigeria. His name now stands as a reference point in effective leadership, and his achievements are proof that quality service is still possible in Nigerian politics.
