The reported neglect of health workers' welfare by the Imo State government, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, is a ticking time bomb that threatens to explode and claim the lives of innocent Imolites. When health workers are not adequately supported, they become demotivated, leading to decreased productivity and poor performance, which ultimately affects patient care.
The government's neglect of health workers' welfare is a clear indication of its lack of value for human life, particularly the lives of those who care for the nation. It's a dead sentence for the people of Imo State, who rely on these health workers for their healthcare needs.
Governor Uzodimma's administration has been accused of ignoring the concerns of health workers, despite numerous pleas and warnings. The recent threat by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) to shut down the health sector is a clear indication that the situation is reaching a boiling point.
Recall that health workers in Imo State, under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and other medical unions, recently embarked on a three-day warning strike to press home their demand over the non-implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). Before the warning strike, they had written many letters to the State Government to press home their demand through the Ministry of Health, but all their efforts were met with disdain and frustrating silence.
In their letters, they are demanding the immediate restoration of CONHESS, full implementation of the approved salary table, and payment of arrears from September 2025, as well as direct engagement with the government to resolve other challenges affecting them. Their documents made available to the media and signed by their leaders read: "Health sector Unions in Imo State, JOHESU and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, after deliberations, the congress unanimously resolved to embark on a three-day warning strike, which commenced on Wednesday, 25th February and ended Friday, 27th February 2026."
Available reports showed that the state government approved an upward review of CONHESS in August 2025, but from the health workers' claim, it has been altered or practically abolished or suspended without any sign of full implementation as soon as possible.
Health workers are the backbone of the healthcare system, and their welfare should be a top priority for the government. The JOHESU's demands are reasonable and necessary to ensure that health workers can provide quality care to patients.
The effects of neglecting health workers' welfare are far-reaching, and the consequences will be devastating if not addressed promptly. The healthcare system will collapse, and the people of Imo State will be the ultimate losers.
It's not just about the health workers; it's about the people they serve. The neglect of health workers' welfare is a neglect of the people, and it's a recipe for disaster. Governor Uzodimma must take immediate action to address the concerns of health workers and prioritize their welfare.
The people of Imo State deserve better healthcare, and it's time for the government to deliver. The government must recognize the value of health workers and prioritize their welfare, rather than treating them like machines that can be taken for granted.
The situation is a test of Governor Uzodimma's leadership, and it's time for him to show his mettle. Will he prioritize the welfare of health workers, or will he continue to ignore their concerns and risk plunging the health sector into crisis?
The people of Imo State are watching, and they expect Governor Uzodimma to act decisively to resolve the crisis. It's time for him to put the welfare of health workers at the forefront of his agenda and ensure that Imolites have access to quality healthcare.
