Andy Uba's in-law, Charles Amuchienwa, may go to jail over exhumation

Following the court verdict by Imo State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Ijeoma Agugua, on appeal filed by the legitimate wife of exhumed Ifeanyichukwu Donatus Amuchienwa, Barr. Mrs Ogechi Henrietta, invalidating the exhumation of the deceased on Wednesday, 23rd December, and ordering them to disclose the whereabouts of the body within seven days, there are strong indications that an in-law to Senator Andy Uba, Charles Nnanna Amuchienwa, who is married to one of the Senator's daughters, and his mother Chinyere Igwegbe, may go to prison over conspiracy and alleged criminal exhumation of the deceased, his father that so much loved, cared, and stood by him the way a father is supposed to stand for his biological son. Chinyere Igwegbe, the mother-in-law of Andy Uba's daughter, is the separated wife of the deceased for over 32 years.

The exhumation was reportedly carried out by the alleged influence of Igwegbe, her lawyer VC Uwalaka, with the help of community vigilantes allegedly provided by HRH George Ekeh on the night of 23rd December 2025.

By this ruling, the verdict has directly or indirectly given legal bite and strength to the alleged criminal acts of Igwegbe, in the exhumation, criminal break and entry, and desecration of the dead.

Recall that the separated wife of Late Chief Ifeanyichukwu Donatus Amuchienwa, Chinyere Igwegbe, and her two sons, Otitodilichukwu and Charles Amuchienwa, went to court in less than four days to the burial to mischievously stop it with an order that came around 3:45 pm on burial day, while the burial ended around 1:45 pm.

They proceeded and sought an ex parte order to exhume his body for autopsy with a wicked and unfounded allegation that his legitimate wife stabbed him to death.

Not satisfied with their mischievous moves and wickedness against the legitimate wife, Barr. Mrs Ogechi Amuchienwa, and Amuchienwa Family Head, Pastor Godfrey Chukwuemeka Amuchienwa, an 84-year-old man, who firmly stood by his brother's wife, a man who is well known as a decent and upright man who has built a name for himself as a man of unquestionable reputation for decades, they proceeded and sought an ex parte order to exhume his body for autopsy with a wicked and unfounded allegation that his legitimate wife stabbed him to death.

Unfortunately, they got the ex parte order by deceiving the court with concocted lies and false impression.

Enveloped with criminality, rascality, a spirit of intimidation, and desperation to destroy the innocent, they exhumed his body in an alleged criminal manner, an act they carried out in the midnight of 23rd December 2025, by criminally breaking into the premises of the deceased and digging out the body with the help of vigilantes allegedly provided by the Traditional Ruler of Ishi Ubomiri, His Royal Highness, Eze George Eke.

The actions of Chinyere Igwegbe and her accomplices have been widely condemned, and many are calling for justice and accountability. Prominent Catholic Priests and members have also condemned the exhumation, calling it an "unpardonable insult" and a "desecration of the deceased's body".

The investigation into the matter is ongoing, and authorities have been urged to bring all the perpetrators to justice.

The family of the deceased has expressed satisfaction with the court's ruling, and the general public is calling for full prosecution of those involved in the exhumation.

The case has highlighted the need for stricter laws and regulations governing the handling of corpses and the importance of respecting the dignity of the dead.

From the actions of Chinyere Igwegbe and her accomplices, they have caused immense pain and suffering to the family of the deceased and have brought shame to the community.

Instead of the monarch defending the oppressed, he silently joined forces with the oppressors to allegedly promote injustice. The masses want the court to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for the desecration of the deceased's body are punished in accordance with the extant laws of the land.

Looking at their offense from the legal perspective, the offenders are liable to at least two years imprisonment or fine. According to the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, in Section 295, it deals with the offense of "improperly interfering with, or offering indignity to, a dead human body". This includes interfering with a corpse without lawful authority, offering indignity to a corpse, such as mutilation or desecration. Punishment: Imprisonment for up to 2 years or a fine.

Section 296 deals with the offense of "improperly obtaining possession of, or interfering with, a corpse". This includes obtaining possession of a corpse without lawful authority, interfering with a corpse in a way that causes distress or outrage. Punishment: Imprisonment for up to 2 years or a fine.

Concerned Imolites who are sympathetic to the plight of Barr. Mrs Ogechi have called on the Imo State government to take steps to protect widows from oppression, suppression from the high and mighty, and prevent similar incidents experienced by Barr. Mrs Ogechi Amuchienwa in the future and ensure that the dignity of the dead is respected.

The case has also raised questions about the role of traditional rulers and their involvement in such matters, especially the manner HRH Eze Ekeh of Ishi Ubomiri threatened to sue her for running to him for justice, the approach of the lawyer to Igwegbe, Barr. VC Uwalaka, towards the exhumation, and the vigilantes involved in the exhumation have also been condemned, and their actions have been deemed unlawful.

Observers and stakeholders have hailed Imo State Acting Chief Judge for invalidating the exhumation carried out by the 32-year separated wife of the deceased, saying she has not supported impunity and criminality. The people are saying there are indications that she was deceived and she has finally realized it.

The case is a test of the Nigerian justice system's ability to protect the rights of citizens and uphold the rule of law. The order to disclose the whereabouts of the corpse is being keenly watched by observers, and stakeholders are eager to see justice served against the exhumers of Late Chief Donatus Amuchienwa.
