Hon. Anayo Onyemaechi, the Majority Leader of Imo State House of Assembly, has thrown his weight behind the clarion call for a comprehensive bush combing operation to tackle the menace of killer herdsmen in the state.
This call comes amid growing concerns over the incessant attacks and violence perpetrated by these groups, which have left many communities in fear and uncertainty. Hon. Onyemaechi's stance underscores the urgent need for collective action to restore peace and security in Imo State.
Recall that shortly after Imo State House of Assembly amended the Imo State Security Organisation ('MSO) Law No 2 of 2021, an Executive Bill sponsored by the Majority Leader to boost the security of the state so as to achieve the needed result in the fight against insecurity,
majority of Imo people started pushing for comprehensive bush combing by all the communities in Owerri and beyond to fish out killer herdsmen and other kidnappers using the bush as their comfort zone.
In the words of the majority Leader; 'I totally support bush combing,is part of the Forest Guide which is already in pipeline.bush combing is not bad, we are waiting for the template for the forest guide. Combing the bush may be part of the activities of the Forest Guide
His Excellency has already made a legislative provision to include the Vigilante into IMSO which is 15 people in each community,when they are employed as vigilante, they will extend their roles to checkmate activities of killer herdsmen.
By what President, Bola Tinubu, is doing with his plans for forest guide,we are waiting for the template. With the training and empowerment, Governor Uzodimma will give the vigilante members, they will be positioned to do the work of Forest Guide very well.
There is nothing wrong in combing the bush,if there is a Clarion Call for it, I will support it for the sake of lives of our people, but let's wait and see the outcome of the forest guide and the template so that we can see, if there is any way we can marry the template, terms and conditions with the new vigilante members from each community".
The amendment tagged "Imo State Security Organisation (IMSO) Amendment Law has an insertion of a new subsection 5 to section 6 of the Principal Law,which empowers all the Autonomous Communities in the State to set up Vigilante Group.
